Te Oriwa Karaitiana

Lawyer

He uri au nō Te Pahipoto, nō Te Tekoteko ō Iratumoana.

Tēnā koe, ko Te Oriwa tōku ingoa.

I am a descendant of Ngāti Awa, born into a small rural town and raised by a close-knit community, deeply immersed in Tikanga Māori. Growing up, I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by kaumātua, whose presence and guidance shaped my understanding of the world and my place within it. The values of whanaungatanga, manaakitanga and rangatiratanga were not just taught – they were lived, and they continue to guide me both personally and professionally.

My approach to law is grounded in these values. I am committed to making the law more accessible and less intimidating, particularly for those who feel disconnected from it. Behind every legal matter is a person, a whānau, and a story that deserves to be heard and respected.

In my role assisting with conveyancing, I bring not only a strong sense of responsibility and attention to detail, but also a people-centred approach. Property transactions can be significant milestones in people’s lives, and I am dedicated to ensuring that clients feel supported, informed, and confident throughout the process. For me, it is about more than completing a transaction—it is about upholding trust, strengthening relationships, and contributing positively to the journeys of those I work with.

After several years of studying away from home, I felt a strong responsibility to return and reconnect with the people of Mataatua Rohe. Being home allows me to further develop my approach to law in a way that supports and safeguards the mana of our people and our whenua.

I have a strong interest in Māori legal issues including matters relating to Te Tiriti ō Waitangi, health, land, and the ongoing impact of these issues on our communities. I am passionate about creating pathways for our Rangatahi so they can see themselves reflected in the law and feel empowered to pursue the opportunities it offers.

Ko au te whenua, ko te whenua, ko au.

(I am the land, and the land is me.)
